Rowland Hobbs
CEO, Co-founder

Tell us about your background. What made you want to work for startup like Stake and what's been your favorite part so far?

I am from a small republic in Siberia called Tuva. It’s a homeland for throat singing technique. I was raised in St. Petersburg, which is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I moved to San Francisco in 2016, and now I live in Delaware. When I first applied I liked the idea of giving Cash Back to renters. I remember at that time I thought that it's such a simple but awesome idea. Jimmy and Rowland were great during the interview process. I chose Stake because of the people working in it, and I believe that Stake can grow. And so far, it has been a great experience. I love the Stake team, everyone is kind, welcoming, and friendly.

You've previously compared writing code to casting spells. What is it about engineering that makes you feel like a wizard?

First of all, I am a big fan of fantasy. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a wizard. I like to see life through a wizard’s lens. When I first tried programming, I immediately thought that programming is like casting spells. As a wizard you can cast incredible spells by studying spellbooks. The same applies to programming. You spend time studying basics, but once you understand a few concepts you can mix and match and get great results.

What are the top 3 ways you like to spend your time outside of work, and why?

I have 2 moods: spending time with my friends and family and spending some time with myself. When I spend time with my friends and family, we usually play board games, softball, volleyball, and chat about our lives. I can be doing anything with them because I just like to be around them. When I spend time with myself, I usually do what I feel like at the moment, like reading, playing video games, studying, or relaxing.

Stake's mission is to make rent financially rewarding. Where do you see Stake in five years, and why do you believe in that mission?

I believe Stake will be in most of the cities where renting an apartment is prominent. Like I said before, the idea behind this company is so simple but genius. It will be in high demand once the company grows even more.

If you were earning Stake Cash Back today, what would you save for?

I would've subscribed for monthly dog toy and treats shipments. I have two boys and they love new stuff.
